After coming back from from my vacation to Greece and Italy, I wanted to add a more Mediterranean feel to my home garden. All I talked about that fall and winter was how I wanted to get my hands on a fig tree. Understanding that we do not quite live in a region where the plant will prosper, I still wanted to give it a try.In the spring of 2007, after listening to my big dreams of growing a fig tree, I received a gift from my father-in-law. And yes it was a small clipping of a fig tree he received from his neighbor. It's a Green Fig Tree, meaning it produces the green figs you see in grocery stores.
With Figs you have two option, plant in it's own pot or in the ground. .Both come with positive and negative results. If planted in a pot, the tree's roots are limited to expand and the tree will remain small but will still produce a lot of fruit. If planted in the ground, the plant will grow but will need to be "fixed" for winter storage. Fixed meaning pulled out of the ground, lowered and covered with leaves or a tarp. When in a pot the tree can be stored in the garage over the winter. Depending on your situation, you can see which works best.
Figs love a lot of sun and need a lot of water too. For my tree I always water either in the morning or evening...The spring time is an important time for the tree, lots of water and sun with some May heat will start the fruit growing process...
Stay tuned for the summer Fig Tree blog...
